Human rights activist and psychologist Israel Joe has criticized Nollywood actor Jim Iyke for making negative comments about single mothers. In a recent interview with a Ghanaian radio station, Iyke claimed that boys raised by single mothers cannot become “proper men.”
Responding on Facebook, Israel Joe called Jim Iyke an “irresponsible over-matured bachelor” and said he has no right to make such statements. Joe argued that Iyke is not better than former U.S. President Barack Obama, who was successfully raised by a single mother.
Joe added that sometimes people speak from their limited experience and try to apply it to everyone. While it is okay to question single motherhood, single mothers should not be treated as if they are inferior.
Society should also pay attention to irresponsible fatherhood. Some cases of single motherhood happen because of mistakes, ignorance, or circumstances, while others are intentional.
Israel Joe pointed out that Jim Iyke’s personal life, including being unmarried, does not give him the moral authority to comment on single mothers. He suggested that Iyke’s views might be influenced by his own experiences.
Finally, Joe said that social issues should be examined in a full and balanced way instead of forming opinions based on limited experiences.
