British-Nigerian artist Darkoo believes that women play a huge role in shaping music trends and making songs popular.
The singer of Favourite Girl said many tracks become hits because women enjoy them, and their influence often makes men listen to and play the same songs.
Speaking on the Comfortably Speaking podcast, Darkoo pointed to the rise of Amapiano, a South African music style, as proof.
She said the genre first gained attention when women started dancing to it on social media, which later drew men in.
She explained: “Music and even the world itself are mostly driven by women. If a guy picks up a girl in his fancy car, he’s going to play what she likes, not just hardcore trap music. Most times, the songs men enjoy are the ones women already vibe to.”
Darkoo added that women were the first to embrace Amapiano, creating dance trends online that many people initially mocked. But later, the same genre became widely loved, even by men.
