As the 2027 elections draw closer, the Nigerian government has reminded civil servants to stay away from political activities while still in service.
Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, emphasized that workers in the public sector must remain neutral and follow the principles guiding their roles.
She gave this warning on Friday during the Quarterly Stakeholders and Citizens Engagement interactive session held in Abuja.
Speaking about a popular Supreme Court ruling, Walson-Jack explained that although civil servants are free to hold membership cards of political parties as part of their right to association, this does not give them permission to engage in partisan politics.
According to her, the judgment has been in existence for years and still stands. She stressed that the decision only protects the right of association, not active involvement in politics.
She added that public workers are duty-bound to serve the government of the day with fairness and neutrality. Any act of partisanship, she warned, will attract disciplinary measures under civil service rules.
