Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has spoken about the ongoing transfer issues involving Ademola Lookman and his future with Atalanta.
The Nigerian winger is pushing for a move to Inter Milan, with talks still underway between the two Serie A sides.
Earlier this month, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Lookman officially asked to leave Atalanta.
Inter Milan made a new offer of up to €45 million (£32.1m), including bonuses, but Atalanta rejected it after turning down an earlier €40 million bid for the 27-year-old.
The club is demanding at least €50 million for the current African Player of the Year.
In response, Lookman has handed in a transfer request, skipped training sessions, and reportedly travelled to London, which has worsened his relationship with the club.
Speaking with journalist Oma Akatugba, Yakubu said he felt sorry for Lookman but noted that having the right guidance could make a big difference in a footballer’s career. He advised Lookman to work with experienced and trustworthy agents.
Yakubu mentioned former NFF president Amaju Pinnick and ex-Spain international Gaizka Mendieta as examples of people who could have handled such negotiations more effectively.
“I feel bad for what Ademola is going through,” Yakubu said. “Players need to surround themselves with strong and capable people during sensitive talks. Pinnick or Mendieta have the experience and reputation to get things done the right way.”
The ex-Everton and Portsmouth striker also recalled how Pinnick influenced his own career: “I see Pinnick as a second father. Once, I had an offer from a Qatari club, but he advised me to wait because I was close to getting my British citizenship.”
Yakubu concluded by saying players should work with people who genuinely protect their interests and help them grow in their careers.
