Bandits k!ll worshiper, abduct others in Sokoto mosque

Gunmen suspected to be bandits stormed a mosque in Marnona village, Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, during early morning prayers. They killed one person and kidnapped several worshipers.

Witnesses said the attackers, who were armed with sophisticated weapons, arrived on Sunday, August 10, 2025, and opened fire on people praying, throwing the community into fear and confusion.

The victim, Alhaji Shu’aibu Marnona, was buried on Monday according to Islamic rites.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Sokoto State APC Chairman, Isah Achida, condemned the attack, describing it as both barbaric and cowardly.

He said targeting worshipers in a sacred place was an attack on humanity and faith. He urged residents to remain united in the fight against insecurity and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

Achida assured the people that the state government, working with security agencies, is making efforts to tackle the menace of banditry. He also expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Security sources believe the attackers may have come from forest camps along the Sokoto-Zamfara border, an area known to shelter armed groups. The gunmen escaped before security forces arrived.

Police spokesperson DSP Ahmed Rufai confirmed that an investigation is underway and promised that more details will be released soon.
