Nigeria police secure conviction of 21 foreigners in major cybercrime case

The Nigeria Police Force has successfully secured the conviction of 21 foreign nationals linked to a major cybercrime network operating in the country.

According to DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer at the Abuja headquarters, the convicted individuals were found guilty of participating in extensive internet scams, hacking schemes, and other cyber-related crimes.

The large-scale operation took place in November 2024, when security operatives raided a location in Abuja. A total of 130 suspects were apprehended, mostly of Chinese and Malaysian origin, alongside 17 Nigerian accomplices.

Out of the suspects arrested, 21 foreign nationals have now been convicted and sentenced. Legal proceedings for the remaining defendants are still ongoing.

Adejobi explained that the arrests were followed by a detailed investigation. The suspects were first taken to court on December 2, 2024, where prosecutors presented strong digital forensic evidence and expert testimonies.

By August 1, 2025, the court had delivered guilty verdicts for 21 individuals, while trials for others continue. The Police, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, remain committed to ensuring all offenders face justice.

The statement from the Force reiterated its unwavering determination to crack down on cybercrime in all forms.

Authorities stressed that the convictions send a clear signal to both domestic and global cybercriminal groups — Nigeria will not tolerate or harbor criminal networks.
