ENDSars: Coroner orders Ikorodu hospital to release records on late journalist Pelumi Onifade’s remains

A Lagos State District Coroner has told Ikorodu General Hospital to give out documents about the body of Pelumi Onifade.

Onifade was a journalist who died while he was in police custody during the #EndSARS protests in October 2020.

The order came after lawyers from Media Rights Agenda, who are working for Onifade’s family, asked the court to make the hospital share the information. Before, the hospital refused to give out the documents, saying it was private medical information.

Onifade worked as a reporter for Gboah TV. He was arrested by police while covering the protests and later found dead at the hospital mortuary.

The Federal High Court in Lagos ordered a coroner’s inquest, a special investigation, after Media Rights Agenda sued the police and Lagos State Government for wrongful death.

The court wants to know exactly how Onifade died and who is responsible.

In July 2024, a judge told the Attorney-General to make sure this investigation happens. Recently, the lawyers visited the hospital to get the records, but the Medical Director refused to release them without a court order.

The Coroner has now officially told the hospital to provide the records within seven days. The case will be reviewed again in August 2025.

This step is important in finding out the truth about what happened to Pelumi Onifade and ensuring justice is served.
