Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian international playing for Atalanta, has reportedly gone on strike by skipping training as he tries to push for a move to Italian rivals Inter Milan.
Lookman has now missed two days of pre-season training after submitting a formal transfer request over the weekend. He also shared a public statement accusing Atalanta of not keeping their promises to him.
Inter Milan recently made a better offer of around €45 million (about £32.1 million) with added bonuses, but Atalanta turned it down. This came after a previous €40 million bid for the 27-year-old forward was also rejected.
Inter are now expected to make a fresh offer that meets Atalanta’s asking price of €50 million. Meanwhile, Lookman missed another one-on-one training session at the club’s Zingonia training facility on Tuesday.
In a message shared on Instagram on Sunday, Lookman expressed frustration, saying: “Even though a suitable offer has now been made, the club is still blocking the transfer and I don’t understand why.”
He went on to say, “After months of empty promises and feeling mistreated as a player and a person, I believe it’s time to speak up. I’ve had enough and I must stand up for what I think is right.”
Atalanta’s CEO, Luca Percassi, has acknowledged that there’s an agreement in place to allow Lookman to leave this summer. However, he clarified that the deal was meant to apply only to offers from top clubs outside Italy’s Serie A. “We had a deal with Lookman a year ago, when we turned down a €20 million bid from PSG,” Percassi explained.
He added that while the club carefully assesses the value and timing of its player transfers, the final decision always lies with Atalanta and not the player.
