Insecurity: Nigerians are tired of your inaction – Amnesty boss, Sanusi tells northern senators

The director of Amnesty International in Nigeria, Isah Sunusi, has criticized Northern senators over what he called their weak reaction to the recent killing of 35 civilians in Zamfara State’s Kaura Namoda area.

In a chat with DAILY POST on Wednesday, Sunusi said that simply condemning the killings is no longer enough. He urged the senators to go beyond words and use their power in government to push for real solutions.

He expressed disappointment over the repeated trend of public condemnations that are not followed by meaningful results. According to him, Nigerians are tired of hearing the same statements without seeing any real action taken.

Sunusi noted that each time such violent attacks happen, the only response from lawmakers is to release a press statement. He said people in Zamfara are living in fear, losing their properties, and unable to farm. He called on the senators to stop repeating empty words and instead force the government to take real action.

On Wednesday, the Northern Senators’ Forum, led by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, released a condolence message after the Kaura Namoda killings. However, the message did not include any plans or steps to improve security or introduce new laws to help prevent such attacks.

Sunusi stated that Amnesty International has raised the alarm several times about the growing violence in Nigeria. He said they have submitted investigative reports to the government, but those reports have been ignored.

He added that one of the main reasons the violence continues is because those responsible for such crimes are rarely prosecuted. He warned that as long as criminals are not held accountable, they will continue to harm innocent people, knowing they can get away with it.
