The Edo State Police Command has started looking into a viral video showing a local politician, Hon. Okai Akhani, being beaten by people said to be vigilante members. The incident reportedly happened in Auchi, a town in Etsako West Local Government Area.
The video, which was filmed on Saturday, July 26, 2025, has been widely shared online. Many Nigerians have reacted strongly, calling for action and expressing shock over the assault.
In response, the police spokesperson, CSP Joel Yamu, released a statement condemning the violence. He said the police do not support any kind of unlawful beating, mistreatment, or abuse by anyone—whether an individual or a group claiming to enforce the law.
Yamu added that the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, has asked for a full investigation. He said the goal is to find out what really happened, identify the people involved, and make sure they face the law.
‘’The Command will not condone any acts of impunity or human rights violations, irrespective of the status of the individuals involved. While we continue to support collaborative efforts in community policing, including the role of vigilante groups in complementing security operations, such roles must be carried out within the ambits of the law and with respect for the rights and dignity of all citizens. Members of the public are urged to remain calm and law-abiding, and to allow the Police to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident.”the statement reads in part
