Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg is de@d

Ryne Sandberg, one of the biggest names in Major League Baseball history, has died at the age of 65. He had been dealing with prostate cancer for a long time before his passing.

The Chicago Cubs, where Sandberg made most of his career highlights, confirmed the news on Monday, July 28. Earlier in January 2024, Sandberg had publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts described Sandberg as a hero to many Cubs fans. He said Sandberg stood out for his honesty, hard work, and dedication to the game. But more than anything, Sandberg was proud of being a husband, father, and grandfather.

Sandberg began his professional career when the Philadelphia Phillies picked him in the 20th round of the 1978 draft. He debuted in the major league in 1981. However, it was during his time with the Chicago Cubs, from 1982 to 1997, that he became a true icon in baseball.

During those 15 seasons, Sandberg earned 10 All-Star selections and won the 1984 National League MVP title. He also claimed nine Gold Glove Awards and once won the Home Run Derby. The Cubs retired his jersey number, 23, and he was honored with a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2024, the Cubs also revealed a statue of him outside Wrigley Field.

In August 2024, Sandberg had said that his cancer was under control. Sadly, by December, he revealed that it had returned.

The Cubs were playing away against the Milwaukee Brewers when news of his death was shared. To honor his memory, the team announced that they would wear a special jersey patch for the rest of the season.

Sandberg’s legacy lives on in the hearts of Cubs fans and baseball lovers around the world.
