The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a female final-year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).
According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the young woman was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend.
He explained that the student worked under a POS (Point of Sale) business owner who gave her ₦2 million to deliver to someone. However, the money wasn’t delivered, and she went missing shortly after. This prompted her boss to report her disappearance to the police.
In their investigation, the police used her phone signal to trace her whereabouts. This led them to her boyfriend’s residence. When officers arrived, they found his room locked. After forcing the door open, they discovered her body already decomposing inside.
Ayanlade added that the boyfriend is still on the run, but the police have arrested his landlord and some others believed to have helped in the crime.
He mentioned that they wouldn’t release the victim’s name for now, stating it’s a sensitive case involving gender-based violence.
After the news spread, students from the university took to the streets in peaceful protest, blocking roads in the town. The police, however, addressed the students and were able to restore peace.
The Student Union Government (SUG) President of AAUA, Mr. Akeem Salami, strongly condemned the rising cases of student killings. He recalled a previous case where two students were kidnapped and killed, with the suspects reportedly being locals from the area.
He expressed shock that another female student had been brutally murdered—stabbed to death and left to rot in her boyfriend’s room for more than three days. The boyfriend, too, was said to be a local of the Akungba community.
Salami urged the state government, security forces, and stakeholders to urgently step in and ensure that the safety of students is made a top priority.
