Lagos traditional rulers demand increased allowances, revenue share

Traditional rulers in Lagos State want the government to increase their monthly payments and allowances. They also asked to be given a fixed share of local government income to help them carry out their duties better.

This call was made by the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Shotobi, during a retreat for traditional rulers in Ikeja. The retreat, held at Sheraton Hotel, was organized by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development. It focused on helping monarchs and government leaders work better together for the good of communities in Lagos.

Oba Shotobi, speaking on behalf of other kings, said the money they receive should be increased. He explained that traditional rulers now have more responsibilities and need better financial support to serve their people.

He also suggested that five percent of local government money should be given directly to traditional rulers. He believes this will help them continue their important work in community development and keeping peace in their areas.

The monarch asked the state to do more for the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and work toward making them officially recognized. He wants the number of local governments in Lagos to grow from 20 to 57 so they can serve people better.

Oba Shotobi also asked for a law that gives traditional rulers legal rights over land in their communities. He said this would confirm their long-standing role in land matters and help them settle land-related problems more easily.

He made it clear that traditional rulers are not fighting for power with politicians. Instead, they want to work together by offering advice and leadership at the community level.

Finally, Oba Shotobi promised that traditional rulers will continue to protect the culture of Lagos, settle community problems, and promote peace. He said they are committed to working for unity and development, and they want the government to recognize their important role in keeping communities stable and growing.
