He linked up with me when I was nobody – Tyla relishes Wizkid’s collaboration

South African Grammy-winning singer Tyla has opened up about her collaboration with Nigerian Afrobeats star Wizkid, saying she’s thankful for how he supported her before she became popular. She revealed in a recent interview with Capital Xtra in London that their song Dynamite was actually recorded three years ago, long before the world knew who she was.

At the time, she was still trying to make a name for herself and didn’t expect someone like Wizkid to want to work with her. However, he agreed to a music session, listened to the songs she played for him, and really liked her sound. That’s how they ended up creating Dynamite together.

Tyla said she has been dancing to the demo in her room for years, hoping that one day she would be able to release it. Now that the song is finally out, it holds a special place in her heart. She also took a moment to praise Wizkid for everything he has done for African music.

According to her, he has done so much to promote the culture and shine a light on African creatives. She described him as extremely talented and said he doesn’t have a single bad song. She added that she admires how he has continued to grow and evolve as an artist over the years.

Tyla rose to international fame in 2023 after her hit song Water became a global sensation. In 2024, she made history by becoming the first person to win the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, a new category introduced at the 66th Grammy Awards.
