Peter Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has advised Nigerian politicians to stop focusing only on political matters and instead think more about how to improve the country and support the people. He shared this advice while speaking at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar after meeting with Dentistry students from the University of Calabar.
He said it was time for leaders to stop talking about the 2027 elections and start focusing on helping people. Obi stressed that development should be the priority, especially in important areas like education, healthcare, and poverty reduction. He pointed out that real change can only happen if politicians start investing in the well-being of Nigerians.
Obi explained that governance is supposed to be about the people, and leadership should focus on service. He said politicians should stop spending huge amounts on themselves while ordinary Nigerians suffer. For example, politicians buy expensive cars while many students lack classrooms and learning tools.
He said this system needs to be changed so that resources are used to develop the country. He reminded people that he once struggled like many youths today, and that’s why he wants a better Nigeria where even a child from a poor background can succeed.
He encouraged the students to take their education seriously because it is their greatest tool to compete globally. Obi also said he wasn’t interested in discussing the 2027 elections right now.
According to him, it’s more important to talk about how to help the average Nigerian put food on the table, fix schools, and provide working hospitals. He added that when the time for the 2027 election comes, he will be ready to contest, but for now, the focus should be on the needs of the people.
