PDP to take legal action against national, state assembly member defectors

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that it will go to court to retrieve the seats of lawmakers who were elected under the party but have now joined another party. This includes both National Assembly and State Assembly members.

This decision was made during the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. After the meeting, the party’s spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba, shared the update through an official statement.

According to the PDP, the goal is to protect the trust and electoral support given to them by Nigerian voters. The party said it would not sit back and watch as its members switch sides without consequence.

They also mentioned that the Nigerian Constitution supports their position. Based on Sections 68 (1)(g) and 109 (1)(g), any lawmaker who leaves the party that helped them win their seat automatically loses that position—unless there’s a legal merger or division in the party. The PDP insisted that none of these situations apply to them, so defectors have no right to hold on to their seats.
