Nigerian music star Ayra Starr recently spoke with Billboard, where she opened up about some of her most popular and iconic photos.
One of the pictures she talked about was her bathroom selfie taken with American singer Coco Jones and an R&B artist. Ayra Starr playfully claimed that she was the first African to ever take a bathroom selfie at the Met Gala—even though fellow Nigerian singer Tems, who was in the photo with her, is also African.
Laughing about it, Ayra said, “First African to take a bathroom selfie at the MET Gala, period!”
Ayra made her debut appearance at the Met Gala on May 5, 2025. The glamorous event was held at the famous Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
She wasn’t alone on the red carpet. Other African stars like Burna Boy, Tems, and Tyla also attended. In addition, top Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and fashion designer Swanky Jerry were part of the strong African presence at the high-profile fashion event.
