South Africa’s women’s football team, Banyana Banyana, have shared their disappointment after losing to Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the WAFCON 2024 semi-final. They said the 2-1 defeat was not the outcome they had hoped for.
The match ended on a sour note for South Africa as they conceded a late goal from Michelle Alozie. This goal knocked them out of the competition on Tuesday night.
Earlier in the match, Rasheedat Ajibade gave Nigeria the lead after converting a penalty. Linda Motlhalo responded with a penalty of her own to level the score for South Africa.
Just when it seemed like the match was heading to extra time, Alozie sent in a long cross. Surprisingly, no one touched it, and it ended up in the back of the net, giving Nigeria the win.
With this loss, South Africa, who won the last WAFCON tournament, will now play in the third-place match against either Ghana or Morocco.
Reacting to the result, the official X (formerly Twitter) page of Banyana Banyana posted: “It ends with a loss against Nigeria… not the result we expected.”
