Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied the rumour that the Nigerian Senate has approved the creation of 12 new states.
He also warned that Africans could harm themselves with how they use social media to spread false information.
Recently, stories appeared online claiming that the Senate had approved 12 new states in Nigeria. These reports caused mixed feelings among Nigerians.
Some believed the Senate had already agreed to the creation of the new states.
But Senator Abdul Ningi, who spoke during Monday’s Senate session, said these reports were not true. He is part of the Constitution Review Committee and confirmed no such decision was made.
Ningi explained that the committee had not yet submitted any reports to the main Constitution Review team, and the story online was fake and misleading.
He said, “As a member of the Constitution Review Committee, I can say that our zonal reports are not ready yet. The main committee has not received anything.”
He stressed that the news about 12 new states being approved was false and careless.
Akpabio, while speaking on the same issue, said he was concerned about how false stories are spread online. He shared his fear that social media misuse could cause serious damage in African societies.
He gave an example, saying people even make fake government letters online, claiming someone rejected a government appointment when it’s not true.
