The United States government has announced changes to immigration fees, including new charges for asylum and work permit applications. These changes begin on July 22, 2025, and are part of updates made under the H.R. 1 Reconciliation Bill.
According to a notice shared on July 18, all forms sent to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on or after July 22 must include the updated fees. If someone sends a form with the old fee after this date, it will be rejected starting August 21, 2025.
One major update is a new $100 fee for Form I-589, which is used to apply for asylum or stop deportation. Also, people waiting for a decision on their asylum request must now pay a $100 Annual Asylum Fee (AAF) every year until their case is resolved.
The cost for Form I-765, which is used to apply for a work permit (EAD), has also gone up. First-time applicants must now pay $550, while those renewing or extending their permit will pay $275. A separate $275 fee also applies if the work permit is requested after getting permission to re-enter the US (re-parole).
Another change affects Form I-360, which is filed by children applying under the Special Immigrant Juvenile category. They must now pay $250. Also, the cost to register for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) using Form I-821 has jumped from $50 to $500.
USCIS explained that these new fees are separate from their regular fees and cannot be waived, even if a person normally qualifies for a waiver.
For those who applied for asylum after October 1, 2024, the $100 AAF will be charged every year starting one year after the date of their application, and will continue until their case is decided.
The changes also affect how long work permits last. Now, those given to people under parole programs will only last up to one year, or until their parole period ends—whichever comes first. People on TPS will also get work permits valid only for one year or for as long as their TPS is active.
USCIS said that more fee changes are coming, including updates to the cost of travel documents (Form I-131) and arrival/departure forms (Form I-102). These will be announced later.
