A Federal High Court in Lagos has approved N10 million bail for Nigerian activist Scott Iguma. The court, led by Justice Friday Oghazi, made this ruling on Monday. Iguma is facing cybercrime charges for allegedly posting a false video and making life-threatening comments.
His lawyer, Stanley Alieke, applied for bail in a motion filed on July 17, 2025. He also submitted a sworn statement, asking the court to grant bail under the most relaxed terms.
The prosecutor, A. Nwabuisi, did not argue against the bail but asked the court to stop Iguma’s team from posting about the person who filed the complaint. He also requested that both sides stay silent about the case in public or online.
In response, Alieke asked the court to apply the same rule to the complainant. He said they should also be stopped from speaking to the press or sharing updates through social media or blogs.
After hearing both sides, Justice Oghazi said he was okay with the request and officially granted the N10 million bail. However, the judge said that Iguma must bring one surety who also meets certain conditions.
The surety must either own property within Lagos court’s area or be a civil servant working with either the federal or Lagos state government. This person must be at least on Grade Level 12 and show that they have been paying taxes.
Justice Oghazi also ordered both Iguma and the complainant to stop making any public statements about the case. He reminded everyone that the matter is now in court and must be handled legally. Lawyers from both sides were told to inform their clients about this rule.
The court has fixed October 10, 2025, as the date when the trial will begin.
Scott Iguma was first brought before the court on July 17, 2025. He faces four serious charges connected to spreading false content and making threats, which break the rules in the 2024 Cybercrimes Act.
