Dumebi Kachikwu, the 2023 presidential flag bearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has said that Peter Obi might be planning to leave the new ADC-led political alliance.
Earlier in July, Peter Obi teamed up with other opposition leaders under the ADC’s platform. This move was meant to form a stronger political force to challenge the APC in the 2027 elections.
Just two days after this coalition was announced, Obi made it clear that he still plans to run for president in 2027. He also stayed with the Labour Party, raising questions about his loyalty to the new coalition.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kachikwu said Obi has now seen that the coalition is not really fair or open to everyone. He claims it is being changed to promote Atiku Abubakar’s presidential dream.
“The whole ADC structure is being packaged for the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar,” Kachikwu claimed. “Since I started warning people about what is happening, we can now see it unfolding. Someone like Mr. Peter Obi now understands that the coalition was never genuine. It was a platform built to push Atiku Abubakar’s ambition. From what we’ve gathered, he’s already exploring other options.”
Kachikwu, who has often accused other politicians of trying to take over his party, said he would not let ADC be used as a tool for Atiku’s political plans. He stressed that the 2027 election must not be left to the usual powerful politicians, while regular Nigerians are ignored.
“This coming election will not be about class exploitation. We will resist it. Nigerians must be informed, empowered, and educated about their political power,” he said.
The tension within the coalition shows that things are not going smoothly. This makes people wonder if the coalition can stay united and truly support opposition candidates for the 2027 election.
