Iran, China, and Russia will hold a high-level meeting on Tuesday to talk about the rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear activities. One of the main topics will be the possible return of United Nations sanctions under a rule known as the “snapback” mechanism.
This meeting was confirmed by Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesperson from Iran’s Foreign Ministry. He said the discussions will center around the snapback rule, which allows UN sanctions to return automatically if Iran seriously breaks the 2015 nuclear agreement.
Baghaei also used the moment to criticize the European countries involved in the nuclear deal — Britain, France, and Germany. He said these countries have failed to fulfill their promises under the agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
He stated that the European sides have been careless and have not properly carried out the terms of the deal.
These statements were made in response to recent warnings from the UK, France, and Germany. The three nations had said they may reimpose sanctions on Iran if the country does not return to the negotiating table to resolve concerns about its growing nuclear program.
