Police stops pro-Peter Obi rally in Kaduna, vows to arrest violators

Supporters of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, were planning a rally in Kaduna to mark his birthday. But the event has now been cancelled following a directive from the Kaduna State Police Command.

According to the police, the rally posed serious security concerns. They received intelligence that some criminals were planning to infiltrate the gathering and cause chaos. Because of this, the rally was stopped to avoid any form of violence or disturbance.

In a statement, the police spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, reminded the public that political rallies are currently suspended in Kaduna. This suspension will remain in place until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially allows political campaigns to start.

The police also mentioned that the same date chosen for the rally was already scheduled by INEC for political parties to hold their primary elections. They explained that this overlap could create tension in the state, especially in areas where different political events are happening at the same time.

To avoid any problems, the police urged the rally organisers to cancel their plans. They said this would help maintain peace and stop criminals from hijacking the event to create disorder.

Although the police acknowledged that citizens have the right to gather and support political figures, they insisted that the ban on political rallies is still in effect.

Finally, the police warned that anyone who ignores this directive will face legal action. They also assured residents that they are fully committed to protecting lives and property across the state.
