Peter Obi: Gov Okpebholo’s threat irresponsible, won’t stand – Igbo Community in FCT

The Igbo Community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has strongly condemned the recent threat made by Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State against Peter Obi, a prominent political figure.

This reaction came through a statement released on Friday night. The President General of the group, Engr Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, signed the statement, expressing the community’s displeasure.

According to the Igbo group, Governor Okpebholo has no legal right to stop Peter Obi from visiting Edo State or anywhere else in Nigeria.

Ellis-Ezenekwe warned that as a sitting governor, Okpebholo should speak more carefully, especially in public. He added that his comments were not fitting for someone in his position.

The group expressed concern over the governor’s claim that Peter Obi’s visit caused the death of three people in the state. The Igbo leader said blaming Obi for violence was highly irresponsible.

He described the governor’s statements as reckless and surprising. The Igbo Community called on him to immediately withdraw his accusations.

They asked Governor Okpebholo to take back the claim that Obi’s visit led to the killings. They insisted it was false and misleading.

The group also accused the governor of ignoring his duties to focus on Peter Obi’s movements. They reminded him that Obi, like every Nigerian, has the right to travel freely.

They warned that dangerous political behavior must end. Nigeria, they said, is a democracy and not a one-party state.

The Igbo Community also urged the country’s security forces to warn Governor Okpebholo to stop making such divisive comments in public.

They claimed the governor’s actions show hatred towards the Igbo people and accused him of promoting tribal bias. They said this is not just about Obi, but about deeper issues troubling the country.

They compared Obi’s situation to that of Nnamdi Kanu, who is still in detention without conviction. They also recalled a similar incident in Benue State where a governor tried to stop Obi’s visit.

Ellis-Ezenekwe said it’s clear the governor fears Peter Obi’s growing popularity and the rise of a new political alliance. He sees Obi as a major figure in this movement.

He ended by saying Nigeria’s problems include bad leadership, arrogance, tribalism, and lack of proper governance. He insisted that Nigeria belongs to everyone, not just a few.
