The Chairman of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that 18 governors who are currently serving are being investigated for different financial crimes.
Olukoyede shared this update on Friday during an event held in Lagos. The event was aimed at educating people on the misuse of Nigeria’s currency, the naira.
He explained that the EFCC doesn’t always wait until governors leave office before beginning investigations. Although certain actions can’t be taken until their terms end because of the law, the agency still starts working while they’re in office.
Olukoyede said, “We are already investigating 18 sitting governors. We’ll take further steps when they leave office.”
He also shared a story about a former Nigerian governor who tried to escape arrest by leaving the country right after stepping down. The governor flew to the UK and threw a grand birthday party at a hotel.
At the party, the former governor started spraying £10 and £50 notes, which shocked the hotel staff. The manager got worried and called emergency services, thinking the man might have a mental issue.
When the police arrived, they even called an ambulance because they thought something was wrong with him mentally, Olukoyede said.
Two other Nigerian governors who were also at the event had to step in to explain things to the police. After they clarified the situation, the police let it go. The hotel manager had never seen anything like that before and misunderstood what was going on.
