Nura Muhammad Mahe, the grandson of former Nigerian President Shehu Shagari, has spoken out about how the late President Muhammadu Buhari treated his grandfather. He said Buhari did not show proper respect to Shagari, even after he passed away.
Mahe made this statement on Wednesday. He said he was unhappy with how the Buhari government handled his grandfather’s funeral.
However, he praised President Bola Tinubu for showing true leadership by organizing a proper state burial for Buhari, who died on Sunday and was buried on Tuesday in Daura with full military honours.
Mahe said Tinubu’s presence at the burial was a sign of respect and unity for the country.
He also compared this to what happened in 2018 when Shehu Shagari died. According to Mahe, Buhari did not attend the funeral or give Shagari a state burial, even though he was in the country at the time.
Instead, Buhari sent a delegation led by Boss Mustapha, who was the Secretary to the Government and not a Muslim, to represent him.
Mahe said this was a sign that Shagari’s legacy was not appreciated enough by Buhari’s administration. He believes Shagari, being Nigeria’s first elected Executive President, deserved better recognition for his service.
