Former U.S. President Barack Obama recently appeared on his wife Michelle Obama’s podcast called IMO, along with her older brother, Craig Robinson. The episode will be released on Wednesday, July 16.
In a short preview, Barack and Michelle talked about raising their daughters, Sasha (24) and Malia (27). Barack said he believes they did a good job as parents, but admitted he might have struggled more if they had a son.
“I think we did a pretty good job of raising our girls,” he said. “But I’ve always thought raising a boy might have been harder for me.” Michelle responded with a simple, “I agree.”
Barack went on to say that he might have been more judgmental or stricter with a boy. He added that without a strong father figure of his own, building a father-son bond could have been more difficult. “I’d like to think I would’ve worked on it,” he said, “but it would’ve been tough without having a dad to show me how.”
Barack has previously talked about growing up without his father. His parents separated when he was two years old, and he was raised by his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, in Hawaii.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time the Obamas mentioned the idea of having a son. In a different episode of the podcast last month, Michelle said she was actually glad they didn’t have a boy.
The couple continues to open up honestly about parenting and family life, giving listeners a chance to see a personal side of the Obamas.
