Nigerian content creator and actor, Zic Saloma, whose real name is Aloma Isaac Junior, recently responded to harsh comments he got online. The backlash came after he posted a video featuring his elderly mother.
In the video, Zic shared that his mother, who is over 70 and currently battling cancer, wanted to attend the premiere of his movie. He was unsure if she had the strength to go, but said she was feeling better after her chemotherapy sessions.
Unfortunately, instead of support, the video attracted a lot of negative comments. Some people mocked the way his mother looked, made fun of her nose, and even called her ugly.
Reacting to these mean comments, Zic called out the trolls. He said those involved are part of a generation that has lost its way. Although he mentioned that the insults didn’t bother him personally, he found it very upsetting that people could be so cruel to an elderly woman who is seriously ill.
He shared his disappointment in today’s youth. He questioned how people who behave this way can be trusted to make good choices about the country’s future or support fairness in society.
Zic also said that while some people wrote kind and encouraging comments, the majority were shockingly mean, especially coming from young adults, including those living outside Nigeria.
He gave an example of the kind of insults he saw, saying, “Some people said my mum’s nose is big or asked why I didn’t do surgery for her. Others called her ugly. Imagine saying that about a 70-year-old woman battling cancer. I hope those saying these things live long enough to look as good as she does at her age.”
He ended by saying that while he already knew the younger generation had problems, this situation proved to him that things are even worse than he thought. He linked this poor behavior to the bigger issues Nigeria faces, such as bad leadership, tribalism, and religious bias.
