Nyesom Wike, who is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former governor of Rivers State, has spoken about the political tension in Edo State. He advised the new Edo governor, Monday Okpebholo, not to investigate his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, for now.
Just a few days ago, Adams Oshiomhole — a former Edo governor and APC leader — publicly asked Okpebholo to begin a full probe into Obaseki’s government. Oshiomhole’s call came shortly after the Supreme Court confirmed Okpebholo as the rightful winner of the governorship election.
However, during his visit to Edo State on Sunday, July 13, Wike had a different opinion. He urged Governor Okpebholo to let things be and not to dig into Obaseki’s past leadership unless absolutely necessary. Wike believes that unless Obaseki starts causing problems for the current government, there’s no need to start a probe right now.
Wike’s advice appears to be a way of encouraging peace and focus in Edo State’s leadership. Still, he made it clear that if Obaseki interferes or causes trouble, Okpebholo should not hesitate to take action.
