The National Assembly of Nigeria has put all its activities on hold for the next seven days to mourn the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a hospital in London.
In a statement released on Monday, July 14, the Clerk of the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, announced the decision. He explained that the suspension will allow lawmakers enough time to attend the late president’s burial ceremonies.
According to the statement, the entire National Assembly is grieving the loss of Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. His death has been described as a great loss to the nation.
As a mark of respect for Buhari’s legacy, both the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives have ordered an immediate suspension of all legislative duties. The break will last until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
All members of the National Assembly have been asked to rearrange their schedules so they can fully take part in the burial events planned for the late leader.
The leadership of the Senate and House extended their sympathy to the government and people of Nigeria, Buhari’s home state of Katsina, as well as his wife, children, and the entire Buhari family.
They praised Buhari for his role in promoting unity in Nigeria and his reputation as an honest leader. They prayed for God to grant him eternal peace and rest in paradise.
The House of Representatives was expected to resume plenary on Tuesday, July 15, following a short break. However, the resumption will now be delayed due to the national mourning period.
