On Friday, Peter Obi, who ran for president under the Labour Party in 2023, officially introduced Dr. George Moghalu as the party’s candidate for the Anambra State governorship election set for November 8, 2025.

The campaign began in Onitsha, and during the event, Obi also confirmed that he would be running for president again in 2027. He expressed confidence in his leadership skills and claimed to be more qualified than other possible presidential candidates.

Obi said, “I’m running for president in 2027, and I’m serious about it. Everyone has a right to run, but none of them has better qualifications than I do. I have the support of senators and representatives who believe in what I stand for.”

Focusing on the Anambra election, Obi asked residents to support Dr. Moghalu. He described Moghalu as a capable and caring leader who would focus on helping the poor and small business owners — people often overlooked by the government.

He added, “Leadership is about compassion. It’s about helping the less privileged and small traders. Dr. Moghalu understands this, and I encourage you to vote for him.”

Obi also responded to rumors that he had joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He explained that he is still a member of the Labour Party and that any connection with ADC is just for teamwork ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said, “I’m still with Labour Party, and so are all our members across Nigeria. Today, we are here to officially begin the campaign for our candidate, Dr. George Moghalu.”

Obi also spoke highly of the deputy governorship candidate, Mrs. Ifeoma Okaro. He said her choice shows LP’s focus on supporting families and promoting gender equality in leadership.

“She is not only well-liked but also highly organized,” Obi said. “Her involvement will help us support families even more.”

While speaking to supporters, Dr. Moghalu promised to lead Anambra with honesty and responsibility.

“If I start listing all our plans, we won’t leave here today,” he said. “But I promise that my deputy and I will serve the state with full commitment. We will get kids back in school, fix the roads, support farming, and keep our word.”

He also promised that taxes would be fair and not a burden on the people.

“Of course, people must pay tax, but we won’t make it hard for them,” he said jokingly. “We will not abuse our people. Every promise we make, we will fulfill.”

Senators Victor Umeh from Anambra Central and Tony Nwonye from Anambra North also gave their full support to Moghalu. They expressed hope that the Labour Party would win the upcoming election.

Now that the campaign has started, many are watching to see if Obi’s influence and Moghalu’s promises will be enough to convince voters and lead to an LP victory in Anambra.
