SportWAFCON 2024: Ihezuo powers Super Falcons into quarter-finals

The Super Falcons have made it into the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, thanks to a late winning goal from substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo in their 1-0 win over Botswana.

In the early part of the match, both teams fought hard to take control, but Nigeria managed to keep more possession.

Botswana tried some long-range shots, but they didn’t really trouble the Nigerian defence.

The first real chance for Nigeria came in the 23rd minute. Ashleigh Plumptre was in a good position after receiving a pass from Toni Payne, but her shot missed the target.

Nigeria kept putting pressure on Botswana’s defence. Payne nearly scored about nine minutes before halftime, but her shot didn’t go on target.

After halftime, Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu made three changes. He brought on Esther Okoronkwo, Christy Ucheibe, and Chiwendu Ihezuo to replace Asisat Oshoala, Toni Payne, and Rinsola Babajide.

Despite the changes, Nigeria found it difficult to break through Botswana’s strong defence. Jennifer Echegini came close with a shot about 12 minutes before the end.

The winning moment finally came right at the 90th minute. Esther Okoronkwo crossed the ball, and Ihezuo was at the right spot to finish it off and give Nigeria the victory.
