Carlo Ancelotti, the current head coach of Brazil’s national football team, has been given a one-year prison sentence over tax fraud charges.
According to The Sun UK, the case relates to 2014 when Ancelotti was managing Spanish football giant Real Madrid. He was accused of hiding earnings from his image rights to avoid paying taxes.
However, Ancelotti was cleared of any similar offences that may have occurred in 2015. These charges were also tied to income from his image rights during his time at Real Madrid.
Even though he has been sentenced, Ancelotti probably won’t go to prison. Spanish law typically allows non-violent offenders with sentences under two years to avoid jail if they have no past criminal record.
Ancelotti’s first spell at Real Madrid lasted three years, ending in 2016 when he moved on to manage Bayern Munich. He later coached Napoli and Everton before returning to Real Madrid in 2021. Earlier this year, he left the club to become the head coach of Brazil.
The coach was accused of intentionally deceiving Spain’s tax authorities to avoid paying over £833,000 in taxes.
Although Ancelotti has always denied the charges, he has previously failed to pay the correct amount of tax.
