Kenneth Okonkwo, a well-known actor and politician, has shared his plan for the 2027 presidential election. He says he will support a northern candidate who is widely accepted by people in the North. According to him, this is the best way to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming election.
Okonkwo was once the spokesperson for the Labour Party. However, he left the party in July 2024 after having issues with the party’s leaders and their former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Speaking during a Channels TV interview on July 8, Okonkwo explained why he has changed his direction politically. He said he is now focused on helping a strong northern candidate win, because only someone with massive support from the North can truly challenge Tinubu.
He believes that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition must choose a well-known and respected northern figure. He mentioned names like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal as possible choices.
According to Okonkwo, picking a southern candidate won’t be enough to unseat Tinubu. He strongly believes a northern heavyweight will have a better chance of winning in 2027.
“My strategy this time around is that I am going to support a northerner in 2027. It must be a northerner that the whole north is willing to support. If the whole north is willing to support an Atiku, why not?
If the whole north is willing to support a Tambuwal, why not? The person must be qualified, and if he has experience in the presidency, it is an added advantage, and when he puts up something from the south, that will push him through” he said
