“The question is Where did they learn it from?”- Peter Obi reacts to violence that erupted at Auchi Polytechnic leading to de@th of two students

Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate, has raised serious concerns over the deadly violence that broke out at Auchi Polytechnic during the student union elections in Edo State. The chaos led to the death of two students and left many others injured.

Obi reacted to the tragic incident on his X account (formerly Twitter) on Monday, July 7. He pointed out that the violence is a sign of growing lawlessness in Nigeria. According to him, the breakdown of leadership and public behavior is influencing young people in the wrong way.

‘’The question is ‘’Where did they learn it from?”

He strongly criticized political leaders for not setting good examples. Obi believes that the way the political class behaves has now trickled down to students and younger generations, who are starting to act in the same harmful ways.

’When we choose to conduct both our public and personal lives with bad behaviour and rascality, we normalise bad behaviour, lawlessness, and criminality.

When we have chosen to ‘fight, snatch it, grab it, and run with it,’ how can we expect our children to do it rightly and democratically when they have learned from us?” he questioned.

Calling the incident both disgraceful and a national shame, Obi urged leaders to take action. He said it’s time to bring back discipline, respect, and strong moral values to help stop such violent behavior in the future.

“It is now up to us, the leaders, to learn how to restore civility, order, and core values in our society by ensuring that our character and behaviour reflect the change we seek in our society,” he said.
