Peter Obi: I Never Worked For Abacha, I Never Met Him

Peter Obi has said that he never worked for General Sani Abacha, the former military Head of State. He also mentioned that he never met Abacha at any time in his life.

He explained that before he became a governor, he never worked for any government. Obi added that people only think he was involved with Abacha’s regime because of a short assignment related to the ports.

Peter Obi shared this during an interview on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics. He was reacting to claims made by Reno Omokri, a former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, who accused him of working with the Abacha government.

Obi said that when Abacha came into power, the ports in Nigeria were shut down, and this caused serious congestion. Goods were not moving in or out, and it became a major issue for business people like him.

He said that some of them decided to travel to Abuja to meet government officials and talk about the problem. They met with the Minister of Finance and also got the chance to explain things to the President.

After the meeting, the President told the Finance Minister to set up a temporary group to help clear the ports. Some business leaders, including Obi, were added to this group to help out.

Obi made it clear that their work lasted only about two to three weeks. After that, the government moved to investigate and make bigger changes to how the ports were managed.

He also said that he had once written about how poorly the ports were run. He found it strange that the Nigerian Ports Authority even had an office outside the country, which was not normal.

Peter Obi repeated that he has never had any personal relationship with Abacha. He said all his past actions and work are available to the public and he has nothing to hide.
