Cristiano Ronaldo has written a touching message after hearing that his Portugal teammate Diogo Jota has died in a car accident.
Jota was 28 years old when the accident happened. He lost control of his Lamborghini in northern Spain. This happened just two weeks after he got married to his longtime girlfriend.
He was travelling with his younger brother, André, who was 26 years old. Sadly, both of them died in the crash early on Thursday morning.
Jota had just married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three kids. In his last Instagram post on Wednesday, he called himself the luckiest man in the world to be her husband.
Reports say that one of the car’s tyres may have burst while Jota was overtaking another car on a highway in Cernadilla, near Zamora in northwestern Spain, not far from the Portuguese border.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the captain of the Portugal national team, posted his feelings on social media. He was heartbroken about the deaths of Jota and André.
This sad news comes just weeks after Ronaldo and Jota had played together to help Portugal win the Nations League.
Ronaldo said, “It doesn’t make sense. We were just together on the national team, and you had just gotten married.”
He also said he sends his sympathy to Jota’s wife, children, and family, and wished them strength during this difficult time.
Ronaldo ended his message by saying, “Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”
Jota had played 49 games for Portugal’s national team and scored 14 goals. He was a well-loved and talented player.
