New information has come out about what happened after rapper Tupac Shakur died. Suge Knight, the former boss of Death Row Records, shared a surprising story about Tupac’s ashes.
In a phone interview from prison, Suge Knight spoke to People magazine. He explained that Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, wanted her son cremated right away. To make that happen, Knight said he spent over $1 million in cash to fulfill her wishes.
Knight shared something strange that happened afterward. He said Tupac’s close friends rolled some of his ashes into a blunt and smoked it. “They passed the ashes around and smoked him,” Knight said. He explained that it was their way of keeping Tupac with them in spirit. “I was happy I was on probation, so I couldn’t smoke. I told his mom I couldn’t join them or I’d get into trouble,” he added.
Knight also spoke about the night Tupac was shot — September 7, 1996. He was the one driving the car with Tupac sitting beside him. They had just left a Mike Tyson boxing match in Las Vegas when another car pulled up and started shooting. Tupac was hit four times, and Knight was grazed by a bullet.
Even though he was hurt, Knight said he managed to keep driving. He said he even helped unbuckle Tupac’s seatbelt while bleeding. “I had to reach over, take off his belt and pull him out,” Knight said.
Tupac was rushed to the hospital and had several surgeries, including one that removed one of his lungs. Sadly, he died six days later, on September 13, 1996, at just 25 years old.
For many years, Tupac’s murder was a mystery. But in September 2023, Las Vegas police arrested Duane “Keefe D” Davis. He had earlier said he was there during the shooting. He has pleaded not guilty and is waiting for his trial, which is scheduled for February 2026.
