Ex-Imo Gov Ohakim, IGP, others win fundamental rights suit by Amuchinwa

A court in Abuja has thrown out a fundamental rights case filed by Lady Chinyere Lilian Amuchinwa. She had taken six people to court, including former Imo State governor Ikedi Ohakim and the current Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Lady Amuchinwa claimed in the case that the police detained her in July 2021 at their Abuja headquarters because of Ohakim and another unnamed person. However, she did not clearly explain why she was detained.

Her claims are linked to earlier public accusations she made against Ohakim. Those accusations were later found to be false, and Ohakim was cleared of any wrongdoing.

In their defense, Ohakim, the police boss, and others argued that the case had no real legal grounds. They also said it was a misuse of the court system because Amuchinwa had filed similar cases in other courts against the same people.

The court noted that Amuchinwa had taken similar actions in the Imo High Court in Owerri, the Court of Appeal in Owerri, and the Federal High Court in Abuja. All those cases had either been dismissed or thrown out.

Justice Binta Mohammed said that the evidence clearly showed that Amuchinwa kept filing the same case in different courts against the same people. The judge ruled this as a misuse of court time and resources.

The judge ruled in favor of the former governor, the police chief, and others. She dismissed Amuchinwa’s case, which was filed on May 4, 2022.

The judge also noted that one of the people listed in the suit had no real connection to the case. His name was removed from the lawsuit.

Since the preliminary objections from the defense succeeded, the judge said there was no need to consider the main case. The case was officially dismissed.
