The Super Falcons of Nigeria have arrived in Casablanca, Morocco, to complete their final training ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The team had been camping in Lisbon, Portugal, and moved to Morocco with a group made up of 22 players and officials. Two key players, Asisat Oshoala from Bay FC and Folashade Ijamilusi who plays in China, joined the team in Casablanca on Tuesday.
Earlier this week, the team played a friendly match against Portugal in Lisbon, which ended in a 0-0 draw. This game was part of their preparations for the main competition. As they continue to prepare, they are also set to play another friendly match against their long-time rivals, the Black Queens of Ghana, on Sunday. This is expected to help them sharpen their game before the tournament kicks off.
Nigeria’s first match in the WAFCON 2024 tournament will take place on Sunday, July 6. They will face Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. After that, the team will also play against Botswana and Algeria in their group matches.
The Super Falcons have a strong record in this tournament. They have won the WAFCON title nine times – in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018. Since the first edition in 1998, they have always reached at least the semi-finals, including in the 2008, 2012, and 2022 tournaments.
