Former US President Donald Trump has urged the Israeli government to either cancel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ongoing corruption trial or give him a pardon. Trump described the trial as a politically motivated attack against his long-time ally.
Trump shared his opinion on Wednesday through his Truth Social platform. Netanyahu has been on trial since his 2019 indictment in Israel, facing accusations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust.
Trump expressed shock over the trial, especially as Israel recently faced major challenges. He called Netanyahu one of the country’s strongest leaders and criticized the legal process as unfair.
He recalled their shared efforts against Iran, which he described as a serious threat to Israel. Trump praised Netanyahu’s strength and loyalty, calling him one of Israel’s greatest warriors in history.
Trump said that any other leader in Netanyahu’s position would have failed. He claimed they together helped prevent a nuclear threat from Iran and insisted Netanyahu was key to Israel’s survival.
Calling the trial a “witch-hunt,” Trump said it was unfair to target someone who had served Israel so well. He compared Netanyahu’s legal situation to his own challenges in the US.
Trump strongly believes the trial should end immediately or that Netanyahu should be granted a pardon. He called Netanyahu a hero and said the legal case was an insult to justice.
He ended his statement by saying that just as the US once helped save Israel, it could now help save Netanyahu. He called the trial a disgrace and said it should not be allowed to continue.
Netanyahu recently made history by becoming the first Israeli Prime Minister to testify as a defendant in a criminal case. He described the charges as completely absurd.
The charges involve three different cases. Netanyahu is accused of accepting expensive gifts from a Hollywood billionaire in exchange for favors and also of giving benefits to media owners in return for positive news coverage.
He denies all the allegations and says the charges were made up by the media and legal system to force him out of power.
