Superstar footballer Neymar renews contract with boyhood club Santos

Brazilian football star Neymar has decided to continue playing for his childhood club, Santos FC. He has signed a contract that keeps him at the club until December this year.

The 33-year-old rejoined Santos in January after leaving Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal. His contract there was ended early, and he chose to return to Brazil on a short-term six-month deal.

During his earlier time at Santos, Neymar was a standout player. He scored 141 goals and assisted 69 times in 243 matches for the club.

Although there were rumours that he might move back to Europe, Neymar has instead decided to remain with Santos until the Brazilian football season ends. His new contract also includes a chance to extend his stay if he chooses to.

Speaking about the decision, Neymar said, “I followed my heart. Santos means everything to me – it’s my home, my past, and my life. I feel loved here and can truly be myself.”

He added that he still has dreams he wants to achieve and plans to do so at Santos. “This is where it all began, and it’s where I want to stay,” he said emotionally.

In March, Neymar was invited back to the Brazilian national team after being away for 17 months. However, he didn’t play in their matches against Colombia and Argentina.

He last played for Brazil in October 2023 when he got injured during a match with Uruguay. So far, Neymar has scored 79 goals in 128 appearances for the national team.

Santos FC’s president Marcelo Teixeira called Neymar’s contract renewal a huge moment for the club and Brazilian football. “This is a gift to our fans,” he said.

Teixeira praised Neymar as a symbol of the club, wearing the famous number 10 shirt. He believes Neymar’s presence will help rebuild Santos and bring it back to glory.
