Speaker Abbas declares Ogun Rep seat vacant

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has announced that the Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency seat in Ogun State is now vacant. This happened because the person who held the position, Adewunmi Onanuga, passed away.

Adewunmi Onanuga died on January 15, 2025, after being sick for a short time. She had served as the Deputy Chief Whip before her death.

Speaker Abbas made this announcement during the House session on Wednesday, June 25. He explained that this step follows Section 68(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which allows the National Assembly to declare a lawmaker’s seat vacant in such situations.

With this announcement, it is now up to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fix a date for a bye-election to fill the empty seat. INEC will also need to announce dates for other open positions in both the state and National Assemblies.

At present, there are five vacant seats in the House of Representatives. Four of them became vacant because the lawmakers passed away. The fifth one, in Oredo Federal Constituency in Edo State, became open after Dennis Idahosa became the Deputy Governor of Edo State.
