Act of terrorism – Akpabio condemns Yelwata massacre

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has strongly condemned the deadly attack on Yelwata community in Benue State, calling it a clear case of terrorism. Over 200 people reportedly died in the violent attack, which has left the nation in shock.

Speaking during the Senate plenary on Wednesday, Akpabio expressed sadness over the incident. He warned that the attack may not just be random violence but could have deeper political motives behind it.

He also gave a strong message to those responsible for the killings. According to him, the attackers will be tracked down and punished according to the law.

At the same time, the Senate has started an investigation into another tragic incident—this time involving twelve travellers from Zaria, Kaduna State. These individuals were heading to a wedding in Quan’pan Local Government Area of Plateau State but were killed in Mangu District on Saturday.

This investigation was prompted by a motion presented by Senator Khalid Mustapha, who represents Kaduna North.

The Senate was clearly upset about these repeated killings and showed respect to the victims by observing a minute of silence in their memory.

In response, the Senate directed its committees on national security, defence, and police affairs to carry out a full investigation into both incidents. They were asked to come up with useful recommendations that could help stop such violence in the future.

The Senate also told the Inspector General of Police to act quickly. They want those behind the Plateau killings to be found and charged in court without delay.
