Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central, is pushing for an investigation into reports that federal contractors haven’t been paid for completed work since 2024.
There are growing claims that many contractors working on projects for Federal Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies haven’t received payment since October 2024.
Earlier in May, the House of Representatives had already summoned top government officials. This included the Central Bank Governor, the Finance Minister, and others, to explain why the delays in payment were happening.
At the Senate meeting on Tuesday, Senator Ningi said it’s important to stop the rumours that the government may not have money to pay. He urged his fellow lawmakers to act fast and find out what’s really going on.
He pointed out that most of the projects tied to lawmakers’ constituencies were finished about six months ago.
Ningi also mentioned that people are saying the finance ministry and the accountant general are selectively deciding which projects to pay for, which he believes is unfair.
He suggested that the Senate’s appropriation committee should be given just two weeks to investigate the issue and bring back a full report.
