Hunter Biden, son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, is facing a lawsuit from a law firm that says he owes them more than $50,000 for legal services. The law firm helped defend him in several federal investigations, including his gun case in Delaware.
The law firm, Winston & Strawn LLP, filed the case on Monday in a Washington D.C. court. They say Hunter did not keep his end of their contract by failing to pay for legal work they already did.
The lawsuit explains that Hunter, who is 55 years old, hired the firm to represent him in difficult legal matters. One of these was a criminal trial in a Delaware court. The law firm says they did a lot of work on his behalf, which led to large legal fees.
Despite trying to get Hunter to pay several times, the firm says he has ignored their requests. They claim he still owes them over $50,000, including interest.
Because he hasn’t paid, the firm is now asking the court to make him pay what he owes. They are also seeking a lien on his assets, which means they want to claim his property or money until he pays.
The lawsuit includes a signed contract from December 23, 2022. In the contract, Hunter agreed to hire Winston & Strawn to help him with legal issues, including investigations by Congress and the U.S. Department of Justice.
Hunter’s former attorney, Abbe Lowell, who used to work at Winston & Strawn, charged $1,510 per hour. Other lawyers and assistants working on the case charged between $230 and $1,945 an hour.
Winston & Strawn said they spent a lot of time and resources helping Hunter. Some of his bills were paid between March 2023 and October 2024, but a big amount is still unpaid.
The firm added that Hunter never complained about any of the bills. As of April 30, 2025, the total unpaid amount, including interest, is well over $50,000.
They say his failure to pay has caused them serious financial loss and that they are taking legal action to recover the money.
