Real Madrid’s coach, Xabi Alonso, said FIFA is now investigating a racial abuse complaint made by Antonio Rüdiger after their 3-1 win over Mexican club Pachuca at the Club World Cup.
The problem happened late in the game, during injury time, when Rüdiger got into an argument with some Pachuca players after he was fouled.
After speaking with Rüdiger, the referee, Ramon Abatti, made an official anti-racism signal by crossing his arms over his chest. This action followed FIFA’s rules for handling racism on the field.
Alonso stated that Real Madrid fully supports Rüdiger. He said, “That’s what Rüdiger said, and we believe him.” He also added that racism must not be tolerated and confirmed that FIFA is now handling the matter.
Cabral, the player accused of making the racist comment, denied doing so. He said he only called Rüdiger a “chicken” and insisted he did not say anything racist.
FIFA will begin its full investigation once the referee’s report is submitted.
