A school in Anambra State, Nigeria, has made the country proud by winning a major international debate. St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, beat top schools from Nigeria and the UK to become the overall winner of the first UK-Nigeria Debate Competition.
The debate was held online on June 19, 2025. It brought together high-performing schools from both Nigeria and the United Kingdom to compete in a virtual setting.
From Nigeria, four schools took part in the contest: Britarch Schools in Abuja, Sure Start School in Abuja, St. Augustine’s College in Jos, and St. John Vianney Science College from Anambra.
On the UK side, schools like Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School joined the competition.
After several tough rounds, St. John Vianney Science College reached the final stage. They performed strongly and earned their place in the last round.
The school beat two British schools—Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School—on their way to the finals, showing confidence and skill in their debates.
The final round featured two Nigerian schools: St. John Vianney Science College and St. Augustine’s College. The final debate was tough, but the Anambra school won with a strong performance.
By winning the final, St. John Vianney Science College became the first-ever champions of the UK-Nigeria Debate Competition, taking home the well-deserved title.
