I was not prepared to rule Nigeria when I became Head of State – Gowon

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has revealed that he was not prepared when he was made leader of the country.

Gowon led Nigeria from 1966 to 1975. His time in power included one of the most difficult times in Nigeria’s history—the Biafran Civil War.

He became Head of State at the young age of 31, following the killing of Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi in 1966.

Gowon remained in power until July 29, 1975, when he was removed from office in a bloodless coup. The coup happened while he was away in Uganda attending an Organization of African Unity (OAU) summit.

After the coup, General Murtala Mohammed took over as the new leader of Nigeria.

In a recent interview with Arise Television, Gowon opened up about his early days as Head of State. He said that his background helped him face leadership challenges.

He said, “I was 31 going on 32. I had strong discipline from home, school, and military training. Even though I wasn’t ready to lead Nigeria, I remained loyal to my country and did my best.”

Gowon added that although he didn’t receive formal training to rule a nation, the values he learned from his strict religious upbringing helped him to handle challenges. He also said good leadership depends on the support of those around you.

Gowon’s honest words have reminded many people of the heavy responsibility of leadership, especially at a young age during difficult times in Nigeria’s history.
